Alternative Women Day events in Armenia

Motherhood and Beauty Day, or simply Women Day, is celebrated on 7 April in Armenia. “Motherhood and Beauty day is the second official holiday dedicated to women. While March 8 celebrates all women, April 7 is mother’s day. Everyone gives presents to his or her mother. In fact, Armenians note that they have a whole month of holidays from March 8 to April 7 dedicated to women.”

However, due to recent events in Yerevan, many Armenian women will not celebrate this Day the usual way, but rather turn this opportunity to protest against the current state of affairs in Armenia.

“National awakening” coalition of NGOs is organising a special Women Day related "popular walks" in the Northern Avenue: men will present flowers to women there this Monday 7 April.

Armenian Women Movement NGO joins this call and further asks women to gather at 3pm in front of the General Prosecutor office in Yerevan to demand from the authorities an immediate release of all political prisoners. They will thereafter join the “popular walks” in the Northern Avenue.

For alternative art events, check out an exhibition of feminist art “Gender Trouble” which will be held in “Academia” Gallery on 24 Baghramyan st in Yerevan. For details of the exhibition, see Unzipped: Gay Armenia

WOMEN REJECTED PROSECUTOR GENERAL’S FLOWERS
Lragir.am

On April 7, the day of maternity, a group of women went on protest in front of the office of prosecutor general, demanding to release those arrested for the events following the presidential election. The prosecutor general sent flowers to the women, considering the holiday, but women rejected the flowers of the prosecutor general.

I swear he must have got this straight from Mussolini. Apparently not every woman was "womanly and charming" today.

PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenia’s President Robert Kocharian congratulated Armenian women on Motherhood and Beauty Day, the leader’s press office reported.

“Dear women,

I congratulate you on Motherhood and Beauty Day. Inexhaustible motherly courage and care stipulate the woman’s exclusive role in the upbringing of young generation with the family and society. Let your hearts fill with pride on the success and worthy deeds of your children. I wish you warmness and happiness in your homes. Be always womanly and charming,” the President’s congratulatory message says.

When people began disappearing in Argentina, it was the mothers and grandmothers who led silent protests.

Armenian women today are becoming politically more active than ever before. Buying them off with flowers didn't work, so I wonder how the regime will attack or attempt to discredit them? Maybe it will say that they should be 'good Armenian' women and instead of protesting in the streets, that they should be sitting at home taking care of their families.

But these women are doing more than taking care of their families, they are also to take care of and to heal their society.

Very good parallels, Mayranoush.

Several months ago I wrote a post citing examples from other countries, including Argentina: Women president for Armenia?

Here is an extract from my post:

“I never was a supporter of choosing someone based on gender. Abilities should be the factor! But may be we lived too long under almost total male dominance in Armenian politics and government. May be woman President will bring those essential qualities which are lacking in our male candidates. May be she will be able to ease the tensions in our society and act as a consolidating power. May be woman President will transform Armenian society into more tolerant and inclusive one. And may be if women gain power in our neighbouring countries too, they will be able to solve the problems in a way only women know and bring long awaited peace to the region.”

And in response to a comment there I said: “I hope (really, really!) that efforts of devoted people will help to awake repressed potential of Armenian women.”

I now want to say that over the recent months and events not only we witnessed the process of awakening of Armenian society, but also awakening of Armenian women, which is very promising. I hope it will develop further and into something sustainable.

All necessary prerequisites for that are out there. Armenian women are now at the front of the movement for civil rights and liberties in our country, and I agree their contribution will be invaluable to heal our society, regardless of whatever or whoever said.

Yes, I knew about it. In fact, I was referring to them in my post - "Armenian Women Movement NGO". Very appropriate place to publish their initial statement. Thanks, Mayranush.
