Armenia gets yet another political prisoner on the 3rd anniversary of Hrant Dink murder in Turkey

I am sure, many will consider these comparisons ‘sacrilegious’. You know what? I do not care. You, ‘many’, were blaming Hrant Dink - when he was alive - for his (reconciliatory) stand to Armenia-Turkey relations. Now he became a ‘hero’ for you. For me, he was always a one - a true hero.

Nikol Pashinyan was never a hero for me. However, what has happened to him (and not only) is an evidence of ongoing violations of human rights in Armenia.

It’s very telling, that on the anniversary of Hrant Dink murder in Turkey, we’ve heard the court ruling in Armenia sentencing prominent opposition editor Nikol Pashinyan to 7 years in prison.

I am sure, today there will be many articles and reports in Armenian media, rightly stating that - 3 years on - there is still no justice in Hrant Dink murder case.

But the pro-government circles will turn a blind eye (=court ruling) that ironically this very same day Armenia gets yet another political prisoner. A disgrace.

I was just thinking about how ironic it is - the Armenian media was talking all day long about the ongoing trial of Hrant Dink in Turkey, but hey - how about our own courts? Not a word!

Honestly I don't find it all that ironic. Hrant struggled for peace and reconciliation. Pashinyan championed yellow journalism as an editor and then pushed despondent people who rallied around demagogues like himself and exhorted them incite violence. While I do not believe all of the blame rests on him - or on the opposition for that matter - I think that alot of it does. So to compare these two guys is just plain wrong.

People like WeAreNotNikol (who I presume are newcomers to the world of Armenian politics) forget how brave Nikol Pashinyan has been in our republic. When Levon was in power, he said everything and anything that needed to be said about his adminstration and him. And when Robert Kocharyan came to power, he likewise remained vigilant. It takes a lot of bravery to do what he is doing sir. Can you imagine yourself surviving beatings, your children and wife being threatened constantly, and then going to jail for all this?

His paper has constantly remained one of the few in our country that has fought off government and oligarchic pressure. That in and of itself is brave and heroic.

And this "inciting violence" complaint is getting old.

Henry - you may call it bravery, I call it demagoguery. He stands for nothing, instead invoking such anti-Armenian figures such as Vano and the rest of the gang-that-drove-Armenia's-future-into-the-toilet.

Put aside all this happy hooey about democracy...in reality, he challenged the authorities to a king of the hill game and lost.

Vano Siradeghian did more for Armenia than most Armenians. People who don't remember what life was like between 1991-1992 can't appreciate what he did. That's why he still has a lot of respect in Armenia. To throw away his contributions because of human rights violations and the like would mean we dimiss all our current generals and military commanders, Vazgen Sarkisian, General Andranik, Garegin Njdeh, and the government of 1919 in general. You have to judge people within the context of their times.

When he was in power, nobody understood what human rights, democracy, or even what a "president" was suppose to be like -- not him, not the opposition, and not the people. When the police units crumbled after the collapse of the Soviet Union -- there was anarchy in the streets, all those old communist mobsters came out of their hiding. He was charged with cleaning all of that up while we fought a war, dealt with the earthquake, and our collapsing economy.

I can sit here and criticize him for his political assasinations and corruption (as I have many times), but I balance that criticism with the knowledge that nobody else at the time would have done a better job -- both in effectiveness and human rights. Not Hrayr Marukhian, not Vazgen Manukyan, not anybody. We were an infant republic dealing with unimaginable crises.

People weren't thinking about nor needed to think about human rights, elections, or democracy. We wanted someone to pick up the phone when we called the police, we wanted our wives and daughters to feel safe on the streets, we wanted something to keep us warm in the winter, we wanted the Nuclear Powerplant to start operating again, and above all, we wanted to win the war.

People who failed to understand that at the time have realized it now -- that's why parties like the ARF are so unpopular, and that's why people like Vazgen Manukian have such little support (despite recieving probably more than 50% of the vote in 1996).

henry - while i may agree with some of your conclusions, i do not endorse the "best of what we had at the time" line. Stalin was the best the commies had, and nostalgiskis may think that the tens of millions were a small price to pay for industrialization and enslaving eastern europe...

the reality is that vano and other thieves rose to power on the naive hope of an earthquake ravaged, patriotic people who sacrificed to make a stand in karabakh.

and they used and abused that hope to generate personal wealth, gloat about the mass exodus of troublemakers as if depopulation was an ambition rather than a devastating side-effect of the misery they contributed to.

he can burn in hell for all i care, and no attempt at contextual amnesia nor any reinventing of himself by others will change the destruction caused by him and his gang of scum.

I don't think the original post was comparing Nikol and Hrant, I think the focus was on just how pathetic the "justice" system of the two countries is. We can disagree with him politically but we can all agree that Nikol's trial was a sham.

Observer - I agree with your conclusions, and especially with the "...how about our own courts? Not a word!" emphasis.
