Disgusting. New video allegedly shows bullying and violence in the Armenian army

UPDATE 23 September 2010Exposed online. First - denial. Now - confirmation. Sadistic officer in Armenia army arrested and faces up to 5 years in prison for abuse of soldiers

UPDATE 17 September 2010: Armenia MoD confirms that those depicted in army hazing video were identified and detained. More details to be provided.

UPDATE 16 September 2010: Video was removed from Dailymotion too, but available elsewhere, e.g. on YouTube. It keeps getting removed and reappearing again. What is more important is that according to the media reports, the sadistic officer on the video was identified, and soon Armenian MoD will make a statement. MoD refused so far to confirm media reports. Will keep you posted on developments.

UPDATE 12 September 2010: Video was removed from YouTube "due to terms of use violation", but re-appeared on Dailymotion.

This video was put on YouTube today and started circulating on Facebook. It titled (AM) Բանակի իրական դեմքը (‘The real face of the army’) and allegedly shows bullying and physical violence in the Armenian army. No description for the video is provided, and it’s not known when and where this video was taken. I can only assume it was taken via mobile phone.

Urgent investigation is needed to reveal the full details of this incident. What is depicted in this video is simply disgusting. This follows recent cases of “suicides” and non combat deaths in the Armenian army. Over the last couple of days there were more reports on “suicide” and non combat violence in the Armenian army.

This video is similar to previously emerged alleged photo evidence of beating in Armenian army as well as similar incidents in Azerbaijan (see here and here)

Mika jan, thanks for posting this. I made a near-total repost of the same thing with large quatations from you here.

However, there's something I want to ask you.

Why did you mention the Azerbaijani army? Does it mean you think its ok to have violence in the Armenian Army as long as its not so bad as it in the Azerbaijani one?

artmika said...

Oh, no, of course not. Was referring to similaritis of exposing violence by posting video evidence on YouTube.

The reason I asked this question, is because I find it important to point out, that every time something like this is mentioned, Armenian Army officials start putting justifications, like - its not so bad as in the Azerbaijani army anyway, et :(

One of the most encouraging status line updates I saw recently was when the officer was reported to have committed suicide after mistreatment.

Although that case concerned the Armenian army, a friend in Azerbaijan simply lamented that mistreatment and hazing is endemic throughout the region.

And, of course, sadly she's right.

The Ministry of Defence of Armenia was quick today to respond to the video.

Quote: “The Ministry of Defence of Armenia strongly condemns preparation and deliberate dissemination of such materials aimed at discrediting and diminishing the reputation of the armed forces of Armenia.”

Basically, what this statement says is that the MoD considers this video material a fabrication. However, before making such statement, the MoD must carry out the investigation to reveal the full circumstances of the incident. And they pledged to do exactly that in the last paragraph of the statement.

Quote: “The Ministry of Defence of Armenia has taken appropriate steps to clarify the authenticity of the video, identify those captured on the video, reveal the authors, punish those who used the violence."

What is the most important and key is to eradicate and fight the root cause of the problem. We all know very well, without the need of videos to prove, that bullying and hazing do exist and widespread in the armed forces and need urgent intervention. Emerging videos or reports simply highlight this disturbing reality and should be taken as a call for actions. Status quo is a violation of human rights of servicemen and consequently a real threat to the national security of Armenia.

What is depicted in this video is unacceptable under any circumstances, and regardless of whether it's our soldier or prisoner of war.

What is even more disturbing to me is how many people are demanding that this be covered up and not made public.

When the video was taken down, it was done after I was able to download it and then I reuploaded it on my youtube account, which the video and comments can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOTt2znYS1c

I have received threats of violence if I don't remove the video in private messages, have been called a trader and for the most part I am seeing the majority of the over 350 comments to be in favor of removing the video since it will scar our reputation.

I not only think we have a problems with violence in the army, but we have a bigger problem with people willing to face the realities that exist in our nation today, thus presumably an unwillingness to face them head on and deal with them.

I will also add that I have been contacted by the MoD media department, who have clearly stated their commitment to find the man in the video and have even gone so far as asking for my help to do this.

artmika said...

Agree, Ara. These are the problems that we must face and deal with. Covering up not only will not solve any problems but will worsen them, will consequently lead to degradation of the army and, as I mentioned above, apart from human rights issues, this will represent the real threat to the national security. MoD should use this sad/unfortunate opportunity to initiate reforms to prevent and effectively tackle similar incidents in the army.
