If you ask my opinion, I’d say - to date - Charles Lonsdale was the best foreign ambassador in Armenia. He fitted right and genuinely into the environment, issues, people transforming the embassy into the “love embassy”. Although Daily Maildubbed it a “love embassy” with negative connotations, for me this was the best term ever to refer to any diplomatic mission. What can be better than love?

[...] The economic crisis means poverty is as serious an issue as ever, though I’ve written before now on some good work being done by NGOs, including Oxfam. There’s also been some progress on gender issues and it’s possible now to hope for some progress on the question of domestic violence in a way I didn’t think possible when I first arrived. There’s even been some limited progress in reporting of lesbian and gay issues, though there’s still a long way to go to overcome some deep-rooted prejudices.
Encouragingly, I think we’re seeing more active participation by young people in both formal and informal politics, including campaigning on particular issues, such as the environment. That’s something we’ve supported and encouraged and meeting bright, active young people has always been one of the things that gives me hope for Armenia’s future, whatever the challenges ahead. The biggest issue though is to ensure that those young people see their future in Armenia, and that they have the opportunity to put their talents to work here, rather than joining the steady outflow of people away from the country.
I have occasionally apologised for adding to that outflow by marrying one of those bright young Armenians, and I will be forcing her to leave, at least temporarily to come with me to Vienna for my next job. As she pointed out though, it’s open to debate if I’m taking her away from Armenia or she is taking me to Armenia. At any rate, I look forward to returning to this fascinating country.
When asked for my feelings on departure, I’ve tended to say that I’m a frustrated optimist: there is a lot of potential and I’ve come across many capable, smart people. But somehow the necessary changes have rarely moved as fast or as far as I would hope. But I remain optimistic that positive changes can and should continue. [...]
And now I’d like to welcome Jonathan Aves and Katherine Leach, new British ambassadors in Yerevan. I have to admit, like many, at first I thought such a dual appointment is a pretty bizarre arrangement. This is probably because there was no much precedent for us and that’s what we used to see: one ambassador per country. But hey... “Two for one”. Normally, a good deal :) Anyone familiar with my blog would know that I frequently defy what was “expected”, “used to” or the “norm”. And I am pretty open and excited to see this new arrangement in action.
I met Jonathan and Katherine in London and have to say they seem full of energy and enthusiasm to contribute for best in Armenia. Here is hoping they will double their efforts in pursuing the issues and more mentioned by Charles in his farewell post.

Tonight I decided to watch the Armenia selection show for Junior Eurovision, but I turned it off instantly as soon as they started promoting Dolphinarium.

The weirdest thing happened before the concert started. Security or stewards demanded bottle caps to be separated from plastic bottles and thrown away before one can enter the concert area. I & friends could not get it: why bottle caps? Someone suggested that they could be thrown at others during the concert, but plastic bottles could be used for the similar purposes too, if one had such a desire. Whose 'genius' idea this was, I wonder?
Dorians - more than an opening act
Absolutely loved Dorians. Always liked them via their YouTube clips, but now that I managed to enjoy their performance live, I am 'officially' their fan. Top class rock performance, in line with best young rock groups elsewhere.
Serj Tankian
Despite criticism re not powerful enough sound and choice of music, Serj Tankian was good too. I expected higher energetics, but he didn't disappoint me. And I loved the stage design, very tasteful, and organic with the outside environment. And symphonic orchestra from the Yerevan Opera House was pretty good too.
Messages & the audience
The audience was very mixed. Not in a good way mixed. Quite a few young people didn't REALLY know why they were there. They probably came in for a free concert and/or to say 'we were at Tankian's concert'. They were minority, perhaps, but a sizeable minority. This group typically had no clue what Tankian was singing about, and was funny to observe how they followed others' to start clapping etc. :)
There were some powerful messages from Serj Tankian about ridiculousness of borders - between people, countries and nations. He made it loud and very clear that "all walls are f*cking empty". But it seemed to me, that for a sizeable proportion of people present at the concert, the only message they got from Tankian was one with the G-word.
Calls for universal recognition of the Armenian Genocide, expectedly, followed by huge applause. But immediately after, Serj Tankian mentioned that we should pay attention to problems within Armenia too, without specifying them. Much weaker applause followed.
(just one of those problems) Environmentalists managed to make their point known during the concert by waving a huge poster "Mining is killing".
And the least applause of the night goes to... Armenia president Serj Sargsyan
People were shouting Serj (meaning Serj Tankian), accompanied by the huge applause for his performance. Then he mentioned that there is another Serj present at the concert - Serj Sargsyan, the president of Armenia, that is. No shouting of his name, and only very weak, hardly noticeable applause followed. This was yet another message of last night, but this time from the audience...
GLOBAL GOLD MINING: A YEAR OF CLAIMS OF CORRUPTION AND ATTEMPTED EXPROPRIATION
Global Gold Corporation (GGC) is an international gold mining company with operations in Armenia and principal offices in Connecticut. For the past few years, GGC has been involved in an at-times hostile dispute with the GOAM and more specifically with the Armenian Minister of Nature Protection over licenses to its mines in Hankavan, Toukhmanuk, Getik and Marjan. GGC brought these disputes and an allegation that the Minister had requested a $3 million bribe to our attention in April 2006.
MINISTER OF NATURE PROTECTION ASKS FOR A $3 MILLION BRIBE
On July 25, 2005, according to GGC, the Armenian Minister of Nature Protection Vartan Aivazian had asked GGC's local attorney Ashot Boghossian to pay a $3 million bribe to Aivazian's close associate and Member of Parliament Mourad Gouloyan, claiming that the payment was necessary to complete the December 2003 sale. We first became aware of the alleged bribe request on April 19, 2006, when the GGC's AmCit Chairman/CEO and Boghossian raised the matter with then U.S. Ambassador Evans. GGC claimed that, as a result of its refusal to pay the bribe, the Minister was unwilling to issue licenses to which GGC was entitled, granted duplicate licenses to other companies for mining sites owned and operated by GGC and generally obstructed GGC's business operations.
We were extremely concerned about these allegations and Ambassador Evans raised them as a "hypothetical" at the U.S.-Armenia Task Force Meeting on May 2, 2006. The Finance Minister's response referred to a mining company, a detail we had not included in our hypothetical, which suggested that other members of the GOAM were also aware of the allegations. The Finance Minister recommended that the company appeal to the Prosecutor General. Due to the poor reputation of the Armenian court system, however, GGC was unwilling to initiate a case locally. The Prosecutor General's office had the authority to begin its own investigation based on the allegations, but failed to do so.
COMMENT: A MESSY SITUATION WITH NO CLEAN FACES
There is no question that GGC has been getting the run around from the Ministry of Nature Protection. While it is continuing its operations in Armenia, the company legitimately feels vulnerable and exposed to potential short-fuse attempts to expropriate its mining properties. Adding to GGC's concern are recent actions taken by the GOAM to force another, Indian-owned, gold mining company out of the local market. Global Gold, however, has at times been less than entirely forthcoming with us. They did not report Minister Aivazian's alleged bribe solicitation until almost a year after it happened, were cagey about the timing of events, and for a number of months appeared reluctant to take the matter to court. We strongly support GGC's decision to file for international arbitration and recommend that future U.S. engagement on this issue focus on the need for a full and complete hearing of the facts rather than a political agreement which might resolve GGC's immediate problems but will do little to advance rule of law in Armenia.
Pretty surreal view in London's Trafalgar square this week (ends Sunday 22 November).
This is a project by Angela Palmer - Ghost Forest Art Project - "to raise public awareness of the connections between deforestation and climate change. It involves taking a series of 10 rainforest tree stumps, most with their buttress roots still attached, from a regulated, commercially logged tropical rainforest in Ghana."
The tree stumps - the installation of “ghost forest” - will then move to Copenhagen (7-18 December 2009) to coincide with the UN Cop15 Climate Change Conference in December.
On 1 September from 14:00-15:00, there will be a protest action in front of the Ministry of Education in Yerevan, demanding to follow up closely on allegations of abuse, irregularities and sexual assault against the children at Nubarashen special needs boarding school. Truly, there are no limits of absurdity in the way Armenian legal system and police work. Examples? Plenty... For example: You get attacked, then YOU are detained as an ‘attacker’. Now the most recent one: You uncovered the evidence of sexual abuse and other irregularities at one of Armenia’s boarding schools, then from being a witness YOU are becoming a defendant charged with libel. That’s exactly what happened with Mariam Sukhudyan, environmental activist better known for Save Teghut Forest campaign.
EcoLur: Mariam Sukhudyan, the youth green movement activist of S.O.S Tegout, was summoned on 15 August to Erebouni Criminal Investigation Department to give an interview concerning the charge of libel in accordance with Part 1, Article 135 of the Criminal Code of RA.
On 13 November 2008, the Public TV Channel prepared a program where one of the pupils at Nubarashen Boarding School № 11 told about sexual harassment by the teacher. The TV program used video fragments submitted activists of S.O.S Teghout who are also engaged with the protection of the rights of vulnerable social layers. Based on this TV program, Erebouni Criminal Investigation Department conducted an investigation, and as a result, the criminal case №12105809 was initiated on 11 February 2009. However, the charge was not sexual harassment, but libel in accordance with Part 1, Article 135 of the Criminal Code of RA. Mariam Sukhudyan and other volunteers of the green movement were summoned as witnesses to this case in May 2009.
However, Mariam Suhkudyan received a summons on 13 August 2009, that says she is to appear to Erebouni Criminal Investigation Department as an accused.
“EcoLur” calls on to the public at large, including state bodies to pay appropriate attention to this case and reminds that the democratization process declared by the President of our country supposes the participation of the public in the country governance, and S.O.S. signals are one of its manifestation forms.
Mariam was among group of young people who volunteered at the Nubarashen boarding school N11 during April - June 2008 within the UN "10 Best Schools" project.

On 15 November 2008 a petition was posted on Big Family blog signed by those young people, uncovering various irregularities and allegations of abuse they witnessed while working as volunteers at the school.
An Unhealthy Atmosphere at the Nubarashen Boarding School Petition
We, the group of young people, have worked on voluntarily basis in Nubarashen Boarding School #11 for children with special needs from April - to June, 2008 within the UN "10 Best Schools" project. We want to bring your attention to a number of problems encountered at the school-- problems to which we cannot stay indifferent. We were able to identify and analyze these problems as a result of the frequent visits and our close relationship with the children.
Education Although the school is meant to host children with special needs, in our opinion, there are also perfectly healthy schoolchildren at the school. We do not find this situation acceptable, as the children with special needs receive a special education program, and as a result the healthy children do not receive a full education. The overall level of education in the school is very low. Many of the graduating schoolchildren do not know how to write, they can hardly read: they are illiterate. We believe this to be not so much a consequence of learning disabilities, but the lack of a caring, decent and attentive teaching process. After a few lessons with the same children, we could easily see the progress through their studies.
School Meals We heard numerous complaints from children regarding the food. We were witness to how they preferred getting by with a piece of bread instead of eating, in their own words, the "disgusting" meals the school provides. It would appear that the meals that the children to not consume is fed to the director's pigs, turkeys and dogs inhabiting the school area. Overall, children are not happy with food and they often stay hungry.
The Hygienic Conditions The air inside the school building is heavy and stinky. During the summer, children take shower twice a week, at best, once a week.
The Treatment of Children According to the stories of the children, they are object to beatings and other forms of physical punishment. We personally witnessed needlessly harsh treatment of the children from teachers and night guards. The school director and other administrative workers use children as a free labour force in their homes and summer houses. Apparently, many of the workers in the school are relatives of the director.
Sexual Assaults We have heard about sexual assault from Armenian language and literature teacher towards high school girls. According to the stories from the girls, there was at least one case of rape. The children assure they have told about this to school administration, but they were not take seriously on account of their mental disabilities.
It is worth mentioning that we have discussed these problems with the school director and personnel. After the talk, our visits to the school became highly undesirable. Meanwhile, the children have been put under pressure to the extent that they even tried to change the stories, although later they confessed they have been told to lie.
Taking into account the above mentioned accounts, we kindly ask you to further explore and to solve the problems as well as to assure our easy access to the school because children have grown attached to us and they feel stressed and anxious when we do not visit them.

Նուբարաշենի թիվ 11 հատուկ դպրոցը նախատեսված է մտավոր եւ ֆիզիկական հաշմանդամ երեխաների համար, բայց երիտասարդները, ինտենսիվ շփվելով երեխաների հետ, նկատում են, որ նրանց մեծամասնությունը ոչ միայն նորմալ մտավոր տվյալներ ունի, այլեւ` «մեծ տենչ գիտելիքի հանդեպ»: Սկսում են աշխատել նրանց հետ, սովորեցնել: Կամավորներից մեկը պատմեց, որ աշակերտների հետ 1 ամիս անգլերեն պարապելուց հետո նրանք սովորեցին այբուբենը: Իսկ 2-3 ամսից հետո կարողացան շփվել ամերիկացիների հետ: Կամավորները վաղուց էին զգացել դպրոցի տնօրինության անբարյացակամ վերաբերմունքը. պարբերաբար երիտասարդներին կանչում էին, հարցուփորձ անում` ինչու եք եկել, ինչ եք ուզում... Կամավորները բացատրում են, որ ելնելով մարդասիրական նպատակներից եւ այլն, ցույց են տալիս անհրաժեշտ փաստաթղթեր ու վկայականներ: Միեւնույնն է` կամավորների ներկայությունը դպրոցում անցանկալի էր, անհանգստացնող: Մի օր աշակերտուհիներից մեկը փաթաթվում է կամավոր աղջիկներից մեկին ու ասում. «Ես ձեզ շատ եմ սիրում, բայց մեզ արգելել են շփվել ձեզ հետ»... Սակայն կամավորներն արդեն հասցրել էին շատ բան իմանալ, պարզել դպրոցում կատարվածից:
Նախ, նկատել էին, որ աշակերտները կիսաքաղց են մնում: Հետո երեխաները պատմում են, որ օրվա վերջում իրենք իրենց ձեռքով իրենց համար պատրաստված ճաշը տանում են տնօրենի խոզերին ու հնդկահավերին: Ուտել այդ կերակուրները հնարավոր չէր:
Կամավորներին ասել էին, որ դպրոցում սովորում են 110 աշակերտներ: Երիտասարդները ոչ միայն չեն տեսնում դպրոցում այդքան աշակերտ, այլեւ շատ հաճախ նկատում են արդեն ծանոթ աշակերտների բացակայությունը: Պարզվում է` տղաներին տանում են ուսուցիչների, տնօրենի այգիներում աշխատեցնելու, աղջիկներին` տներում:
Դասուսուցումը չի կարող բավարարել անգամ մտավոր հաշմանդամ երեխաներին, ուր մնաց` լիարժեք երեխային: Աշակերտները պատմել էին, որ ստուգումների ժամանակ իրենք` միանգամայն առողջ երեխաները, ուսուցիչների ցուցումով տկարամիտի դեր են խաղում, եւ որ դա չափազանց զվարճալի է:
Դասերից հետո բոլորին փակում են մի սենյակում, միացնում հեռուստացույցն ու հորդորում սերիալ նայել: Դուրս գալը, զբոսնելը, օրը ուրիշ զբաղմունքներով լցնելը արգելվում է: Սենյակներում, ողջ դպրոցում ծանր հոտ է տարածված: Սանիտարահիգիենիկ տարրական կանոնները չեն պահպանվում. սենյակները հազվադեպ են մաքրվում, երեխաները ուշ-ուշ են լողանում:
Պարապմունքների ընթացքում կամավորների հետ մտերմացած աշակերտուհիները պատմում են ուսուցիչների կողմից կատարված սեռական ոտնձգությունների, բռնաբարության փորձերի մասին: Եվ բոլոր աշակերտուհիները նշում են իրենց հայոց լեզվի եւ գրականության ուսուցչի անունը` Լեւոն Ավագյան: Կամավորները պատմում են տնօրենին: Սա ասում է, որ այդ պատմությունները աղջիկների վառ երեւակայության արդյունքն է, չէ՞ որ նրանք ամբողջ օրը սերիալ են նայում:
Երիտասարդները դիմում են նաեւ հոգեւորականների, ՄԱԿ-ի ներկայացուցիչների, լրագրողների: Հանրային հեռուստաընկերությունը եթեր է հեռարձակում կամավորների նկարահանած տեսաերիզը` քողարկելով իր հետ կատարվածի մասին պատմող աղջկա դեմքը: Դրանից հետո հայոց լեզվի ուսուցիչ Լեւոն Ավագյանը հեռանում է դպրոցից` այլեւս ստեղծագործական աշխատանքներով զբաղվելու նպատակով: Ոչ Լ.Ավագյանը, ոչ մյուս ուսուցիչները, ոչ դպրոցի տնօրենը պատասխանատվության չեն կանչվում: Ոստիկանության Էրեբունու քննչական բաժնից պատասխանատվության են կանչվում կամավոր երիտասարդները` առանց ծանուցագրի, մի հեռախոսազանգով: «Մենք սպասում էինք, որ քննիչները պետք է խիստ մոտեցում ունենային դպրոցի տնօրինության նկատմամբ: Ի վերջո, եթե անգամ դեռ չի ապացուցվել կատարվածը, բայց վկաները շատ են, փաստերը` բազմախոսուն: Այնինչ մենք էինք մեղադրյալի դերում հայտնվել», - պատմեց կամավոր տղաներից մեկը:
«Մեզ հետ կոպիտ վարվեցին եւ շատ վիրավորական: Քննիչ Ադամյանն ասաց, որ ավելի լավ կլիներ մենք ինքնապաշտպանությամբ զբաղվեինք: Հեգնեց, թե մեզ առաքյալների տեղ ենք դրել: Մինչ այդ ես չգիտեի, որ ցուցմունք գրելու համար իրավունք չունեն մեզ 3 ժամից ավել պահելու քննչական բաժնում: Նրանք ինձ այնտեղ պահեցին 7 ժամ», - պատմեց Մարիամ Սուխուդյանը:
Մի խոսքով, երիտասարդներին քննչական բաժնում սպառնացել են, վախեցրել, ասել, որ մեղադրողները` աղջիկները, հրաժարվել են տեսաերիզում պատմածից, եւ որ ամբողջ պատասխանատվությունը իրենց` կամավորների` վարագույրը բարձրացնողների վրա է: Ի դեպ, երիտասարդները ձայնագրել են այն հեռախոսազանգը, որտեղ աղջիկներից մեկը զանգում է կամավորին ու տեղեկացնում, որ ինքը քննչական բաժնում հերքելու է ամեն ինչ, ասելու է, որ կամավորների սովորեցրածով է ինքը նման պատմություններ պատմել, իրականում ոչինչ էլ չի եղել: Եվ որ ինքը ստիպված է այդպես խոսել, քանի որ տնօրենը կանչել է մորը, հոխորտացել, սպառնացել, մայրն էլ ծեծել է իրեն` աշխարհով մեկ խայտառակ անելու համար եւ ստիպել հերքել ամեն ինչ: Աշակերտուհիները արդեն հարցաքննվել են: Նրանք ամեն ինչ հերքել են:
Երեկ ԿԳՆ-ից զանգահարել են կամավորներին, առաջարկել միասին գնալ դպրոց, ստուգայց անցկացնել: Երիտասարդները մերժել են: «Եթե հիմա դուք գնաք այդ դպրոց, կտեսնեք, որ դպրոցը մաքուր է, աշակերտները գոհ են, ոչ մի դժգոհություն չունեն: Բայց այդպես միայն առաջին հայացքից է, հավատացեք»: Երիտասարդների պայքարը գոնե մի արդյունք տվել է. դպրոցը գոնե առժամանակ մաքրվեց գարշահոտերից եւ Լեւոն Ավագյանից:
Ի դեպ, Նուբարաշենի թիվ 11 հատուկ դպրոցն են ավարտել լրագրողներ Գագիկ Շամշյանն ու Մհեր Արշակյանը: Գ.Շամշյանը այդ դպրոց է բերվել Կամոյի, Մ.Արշակյանը` Մեղրիի մանկատնից: Նրանք այդ դպրոց են բերվել իբրեւ տկարամիտներ` համալրելու այդպիսիների գլխաքանակը:
Գագիկ Շամշյանը մինչեւ հիմա հիշում է այդ դպրոցի լավ ու վատ ուսուցիչներին: Եթե անգամ չցանկանա հիշել, ճակատի սպին գոնե ամեն առավոտ հիշեցնելու է լեզվի ուսուցիչ Լեւոն Ավագյանի` մանրահատակի կտորով գլխին հասցրած հարվածը: Մինչեւ հիմա հիշում է ֆիզկուլտուրայի դասատու Վարազդատ Մկրտչյանին, որին երեխաները «կապույտ մորուք» էին ասում, փայտամշակման դասատու Դավիթ Միրզոյանին, որն իր իսկ սարքած ցուցափայտով ծեծում էր իրենց: Եվ թե ինչպես իրենց տանում էր իր այգին, բանջարանոցը, աշխատեցնում, բայց վայը եկել, տարել էր նրան, ով մի պոմիդոր, մի ցոգոլ կպոկեր:
Իսկ ի՞նչ պետք է տեսնի Կրթության եւ գիտության նախարարությունը Նուբարաշենի թիվ 11 հատուկ դպրոցում` մաքուր մանրահատա՞կ, կահկարասի՞, լվացված զուգարաննե՞ր... Ի՞նչ կարող է տեսնել, օրինակ, ԿԳՆ աշխատակից Արծվիկ Արշակյանը, ով նախկինում այդ դպրոցի փոխտնօրենն էր` բռնություննե՞րը, բռնաբարություննե՞րը, առողջ երեխաներին տկարամտացնե՞լը: Նրանք նման բաներ չեն տեսնում. ոչ այն պատճառով, որ ամենակարեւոր բաները աչքով չես տեսնի: Նրանք այնքան ազնիվ են, որ ուրիշի աչքի գերանը տեսնելիս ձայն չեն հանում, որովհետեւ տեսնում են նաեւ իրենց աչքի գերանը:

When I first read the news yesterday, I thought it's an intentional (and cleverly made) provocation - a made up story - by environmentalist in Armenia to use names of current and former first ladies to attract more attention and publicity to their cause. Today with all these photocopies of signatures and statements (as per above and below), if confirmed (see, I am still cautious, want to hear confirmations from the first ladies themselves), this could be the most hilarious news of the day.

Armenia’s current and former first ladies have signed a petition against a controversial mining project approved by their husbands, ecologists strongly opposed to its implementation said on Wednesday.
The country’s leading environment protection groups and other non-governmental organizations have for years been campaigning against plans by the Armenian Copper Program (ACP) company to develop a massive copper and molybdenum deposit in the northern Lori region. The Teghut deposit is estimated to contain 1.6 million tons of copper and about 100,000 tons of molybdenum.
The project, if implemented, will lead to the destruction of 357 hectares of rich forest, including 128,000 trees. Critics say that would wreak further havoc on Armenia’s green areas that have already shrunk dramatically since the 1990s. [...]
The non-governmental Committee to Protect Teghut launched last month a fresh campaign against the mining project, collecting signatures in support of its stance. It said on Wednesday that a relevant petition addressed to Armenia’s president, prime minister and parliament speaker has already been signed by about 5,000 citizens, among them First Lady Rita Sarkisian and Kocharian’s wife Bella.
According to Mariam Sukhudian, a member of the committee, the two women agreed to sign the petition as they visited a public park in Yerevan on Tuesday. “We noticed Kocharian’s wife and the current first lady, Rita Sarkisian, there” she told RFE/RL’s Armenian service. “One of our girls, Arpine, approached Bella Kocharian. As soon as she learned what the matter is, she took the paper and signed it. Rita said, ‘Is it about that copper-molybdenum thing?’ and signed it too.”
“We can say that, in a sense, they have joined our movement,” said Sukhudian. “We will scan their signatures and disseminate them through the Internet.” [...]

At the time, government officials and National Assembly Deputies labeled such allegations as ridiculous and without merit.
The private house pictured here on the shore of Lake Sevan, with its numerous annexes, belongs to Aram Harutyunyan, the Minister of Nature Protection. (The photo depicts only a portion of the private compound). Construction on the house began this year and renovation work is still continuing. The house is located on the road that leads from the village of Shorzha to the Artanish Nature Preserve, a few meters removed from the shoreline. Sources close to “Hetq” claim that one year ago the house site was a part of the Artanish Preserve lands and that it was detached from the Preserve’s boundaries after a decision passed by the government.
There were times when Armenian environmentalists trying hard to find ways to increase shrinking water level of Lake Sevan. I remember even the slightest increase in the water level made into the headlines of the main news programme on Armenian TV. This was considered a sign that Armenian ecologists and other specialists along with the government were on the right path and doing whatever possible to reach the aim and preserve the lake which is among favourite holiday destinations in Armenia. Now it’s all about business interests. Apparently, recent raise in the water level of Lake Sevan ‘threatens’ coastal buildings which belong to various Armenian oligarchs. Solution? Armenian government decided to increase water supply from Lake Sevan “for agricultural irrigation and other purposes”, an argument which is dismissed by environmental specialists.
"Despite the dry weather during the growing season, we get information about the extremely high yield" - says Karine Danielyan, well known environmentalist, representative of the National Committee of UNEP (the United Nations Environment Programme). "If water needed for irrigation, why it is needed more in August than during the harvest season? One of the answers to the question could be that raising the water level is not desirable for owners of coastal buildings and so-called recreation zones, number of which is constantly growing."
Tomorrow Armenian parliament intends to discuss and approve government’s decision. Environmentalists are calling for a protest demonstration in front of the parliament on 19 August, 11.30 - SOS Sevan!
There will be environmental rally in Yerevan, 30 April, 4pm, in front of the Armenian parliament.
"Stop killing" - this will be the main message of the rally. Along with general environmental concerns, "Armenia-Russia uranium deal" and "Save Teghut" will be the key target themes of the rally.
The Armenian and Russian governments set up on Tuesday a joint venture that will explore and possibly develop Armenia’s untapped uranium reserves concentrated in the southeastern Syunik region. “The new joint venture will explore and ascertain our uranium reserves,” Armenian Environment Minister Aram Harutiunian said after signing a relevant agreement in Yerevan with Russia’s state-owned Atomredmetzoloto company, which mines and processes uranium. In accordance that agreement, the Russian firm will have a 50 percent stake in the venture and invest about $3 million in exploratory work to be conducted in Syunik during the first year of operations. The mountainous region bordering Iran was explored by Soviet geologists in the 1950-1907s and is estimated to contain 30,000 metric tons of uranium ore. [...]
Minister for Trade and Economic Development Nerses Yeritsian [Unzipped: currently - Minister of Economy] voiced support on Friday for a multimillion-dollar mining project that, if implemented, will lead to the destruction of a rich forest in northern Armenia and is strongly opposed by environmentalists. The Armenian Copper Program (ACP), the country’s second largest mining company, plans to invest $270 million in turning the Teghut forest rich in copper and molybdenum ores into a big mine in the next five years. The Liechtenstein-registered company is already making preparations for the start of open-pit operations in the 357-hectare area covered by some 128,000 trees. The private company has also pledged to build new schools and make other investments in the local infrastructure. Environment protection groups insist that all of this would be trumped by the heavy ecological cost of the project. Armenia’s mining and metallurgy sectors, dominated by foreign investors, have expanded rapidly in recent years on the back of soaring international prices for copper and molybdenum.
