Tupolev TY-154: ancient Soviet plane that crashes and should be banned

From my tweet today: #Iran plane crash en route to #Armenia 2009 & #Poland plane crash in #Russia: Tupolev TY-154. Ban this plane! (see my 2009 tweet below)

My tweet of 2009 re Iran plane crash en route to Armenia:
Why on earth #Iran still uses that ancient Russian plane TY-154! They should be banned. #armenia #yerevan.
[from AFP 2009 report: "The Tupolev Tu-154 plane is a Soviet-designed, medium-range three-engine aircraft. It was a best-seller for the Russian aircraft industry between 1972 and 1994."]

Back in 2009, after raising that question (above) re TY-154, I then posted an answer, via BBC:
BBC confirmes http://bit.ly/BpFW9 that poor air safety record in #Iran is due to sanctions imposed by US. #armenia #yerevan
I may understand the reasons in Iran, but why on earth Poland still uses these planes is beyond me.

[from BBC report: "The president was flying in a Tupolev 154, a plane that was designed in the 1960s and capable of carrying more than 100 passengers. Our correspondent says there had been calls for Polish leaders to upgrade their planes."]

Armenia’s ‘under the belt’ president

Oh, that lovely ‘jokes’ or ‘sramtutyunner’ [‘wittiness’] by Armenia’s ex(2nd)-president Kocharyan. Didn’t you miss them? I did. You know, a ‘guilty pleasure’ type of way. Since the day he became president, it has always been on a ‘under the belt‘ level for Kocharyan. No surprises here. That he specifically fell down this time to a ‘hemorrhoids’ level, is yet another of his ‘achievements’, I suppose.

A perfect picture A1+ has chosen to accompany Kocharyan’s statement. Priceless.

Kocharyan claims he “doesn’t care” what his critiques, and especially Armenia’s ex(1st)-president Ter-Petrosyan, say of him. Of course, he does. Otherwise, he would not have issued such a statement responding to Ter-Petrosyan’s not exactly the most impressive speech.

Some say they deserve each other. I disagree. When it comes to ‘under the belt’ attacks, Kocharyan is a clear winner. No one in Armenia can get even close.

Recent continuous speculations of Kocharyan’s return to Armenian political life are being manipulated by all sides (authorities, opposition, and Kocharyan himself). Even discussing such a theoretical possibility puts Armenia’s future into the ‘under the belt’ situation. An individual may go down that way. It’s his/her choice. But a country... ‘Been there, done that’. Last time it ended up with 1 March 08 bloodshed.

Kyrgyzstan: #freekg? I do not think so... Not sure, at least

Following current developments in Kyrgyzstan on Twitter, I noticed the hashtag #freekg...

We've seen the eventual transformation of a 'Tulip Revolution' in Kyrgyzstan, 'Rose Revolution' in Georgia...'Democrats' turned into autocrats.

#freekg? I do not think so... Will abstain from using #freekg on Twitter, as not sure that current opposition there won't be the same after they come to the power.

I know, I know, similar thoughts could be applied to Armenia too. Anyway...

Sad that reality check ruins people's hopes like that...

Armenia: ‘A+’ for signatures, ‘Fail’ for practice

Below is a timeline of truly historic and groundbreaking international agreements which Armenia became part of over the course of past two years.

- 31 March 2010 Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, representing the national governments of its all 47 Member States, including Armenia, adopted historic Recommendations on measures to combat discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity.

- 30 September 2009 Armenia aligns with the EU human rights / gay rights statement.

- 15 May 2009 Armenia joins EU statement condemning homophobia.

- 19 December 2008 Armenia signed a groundbreaking UN statement against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Armenian authorities signed the UN statement, they aligned with the EU statements, they agreed with the adoption of the Council of Europe recommendations. Yes, this sounds great. Any government could be proud of such a record. I sincerely want to commend them for that.

However, great as this may sound, it’s all on paper. The reality is far from idillic. Here is merely part of that sad and shameful reality: the latest report by EurasiaNet

ARMENIA: GAYS LIVE WITH THREATS OF VIOLENCE, ABUSE

A sad and shameful reality for a country that seeks one day to become part of the EU. A damning one for Armenia's international reputation.

If you do not act upon your signatures, if you do not act upon the recommendations and human rights obligations you yourself are making, then your signatures do not worth a penny.

Until such a mentality has changed, our dream of a better future within the European family of nations, where I believe Armenia belongs, will remain a dream.

...of "Armenian descent"

Looking through the lists of scholarship possibilities available in the UK (among Diasporan organisations) specifically for Armenian students, I came across one definition of being of Armenian descent as “sons and daughters of Armenian fathers”.

This makes me wonder. How do we define the “Armenian descent”? I know, it’s common to consider belonging to an ethnic group from the father’s side. Perhaps, it’s easy for administrative purposes and considering limited resources available. But what about those with the mixed ethnicity, say, half-Armenians on the mother’s side? Why only students of “Armenian fathers”?

Sure, in case of mixed ethnicity, the most important is how this particular person identifies himself/herself, in terms of ethnic belonging. On the other hand, we have habits of calling Armenian anyone who has just 1/100s, or any trace, of Armenian roots.

YER - LON

I can’t explain how or why but looking at this picture I took not so long ago in Hampstead Heath (London), view from the Heath (via this particular picture) reminded me that of Yerevan (minus lack of Ararat). It’s probably just me... having a moment of nostalgia. It’s as if I took this picture in London overlooking Yerevan.

In past, gay rights were reflected within the US State Department annual human rights country reports very briefly under the "Other Societal Abuses and Discrimination" section (see e.g. 2007 and 2008 reports). In a remarkable shift of policy, this year's report which was published today and reflects 2009, features gay rights much more prominently under the separate section: "Societal Abuses, Discrimination, and Acts of Violence Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity" This may be the clearest yet indication of shift in Obama administration's policy and that gay rights in the region and elsewhere will be monitored and act upon more seriously.

S.O.S. Save Cinema Moscow Open-Air Hall in Yerevan

"Please join the group and raise your voice to SAVE this unique architectural building of 60s and the only Open-Air Cinema Hall in Yerevan" - this was from a message I received via Facebook. I've joined the group, and advise you do the same.

From the Facebook group SAVE Cinema Moscow Open-Air Hall
The Poghos-Petros church that was situated in the place of present Moscow Cinema has been destroyed in the first years of Soviet Union. In 1960s in the backyard of the cinema open air hall was built by the architects Spartak Knteghcyan and Telman Gevorgyan. The building is considered as one of the best modern architectural venues of the city.

At present, the decision on the demolishment is followed by the expression of discontent of different layers of the citizens of Yerevan, and this group is also created as a result of this discontent.
***

Frankly, I cannot hide my dismay with this appalling decision by the Armenian government (of 25 February 2010) to demolish one of the finest buildings in the very heart of Yerevan to allow for yet another church in the capital. Don’t we have enough churches? There is only one open-air cinema hall in Yerevan; there are merely 2 cinemas in the capital which is a disgrace and should be a matter of concern for the government and Ministry of Culture in the first instance. Compare this with the ever growing number of churches... There was a saying in Soviet Armenia that Yerevan is an “open air museum” which was, of course, an exaggeration, but we certainly had some fine examples of architecture there. So what is now? Are we re-defining Yerevan as a “church-town”? Just because there was a church there which was destroyed back in Soviet times, does not mean that we should now repeat the same mistakes and destroy a fine cinema hall to re-build yet another church. Right next to the cinema - literally few steps across the street - there is already a church there which I wrote about earlier. Back in 2008, I posted re new construction project of a residence for The Catholicos and church which was accompanied by yet another demolition of Yerevan buildings: Armenian church: can’t get enough?

Open letters are posted to Armenian prime minister and The Catholicos calling to reconsider the decision, drop the demolition plans, and save Cinema Moscow’s open-air hall.

Let’s raise our voice and express discontent to Armenian government’s appaling decision. Let’s protect what is little left of the finest examples of Armenian architecture.

ex-British ambassador in Yerevan: ‘Armenia has no geopolitical significance for the West’

Was at a panel discussion re Armenian Genocide, Turkey etc at LSE (the London School of Economics and Political Science) organised by the local Armenian Society.

The panel included: Lord Eric Avebury, Member of the House of Lords, Vice-Chair on the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights; David Miller, former British Ambassador to Armenia; and Ara Sarafian, British historian, founding director of the Gomidas Institute in London.

Responding to one of the questions on Armenia’s strategic role in the region, David Miller, former British Ambassador to Armenia, effectively said that - geostrategically - Armenia has no significance in the region, for the West, that is. Azebaijan - yes (oil), Georgia - yes (location, Russia, NATO etc), Turkey - yes (number of factors), but Armenia - no. From the Western perspectives, the only importance Armenia has in the region is to ensure peace as war may threaten West’s commercial interests.

Perhaps, you may add here the existence of Diaspora too.

He also said: “You cannot alter geography”. (this was not a reference to Karabakh, but to Armenia’s geostrategic location, or the lack of it)

While few attempted at questioning his views, arguing that history knows examples of such alterations, and its because of that very alterations that Armenia’s geostrategic location shrank to current borders, for many present his words sounded like ‘bitter truth’.

Eh, there were times... There was very brief time in modern Armenian post-Soviet history, when its significance was determined by being the most democratic state in the region, an example for others. Sadly, this factor has long gone.

Armenia: Homophobia Hall of Shame

Starting today, there will be a new page on my blog - Armenia: Homophobia Hall of Shame. Any organisation or individual in Armenia and Diaspora that promotes homophobia will be eligible for the entry. Whenever appropriate or available, link will be placed next to the name with the example(s) of hatred.

First entrants to the Hall are Iravunk newspaper and Radio Van. More entries to follow, including based on my past postings.

Relevant reading:

Playing low: Radio Van in Yerevan promotes hatred and homophobia

No, putting individuals or organisations to the Hall of Shame does not bring me pleasure. I wish the Hall is empty or does not exit at all. It won’t be your usual blacklist. That’s not the main purpose. The purpose is to show that hate is wrong. Hate is not cool. Hate should NOT be profitable. And there are always ways out. You just have to want to get out and make efforts to change yourself for better, to free yourself of hate.

If you think of collaborating with or sponsoring an individual or organisation in Armenia and/or Diaspora, use this list as an exclusion criteria.

Failing to engage with broader Armenian community in London

If you read that during his visit to London president Serj Sargsyan have met with the Armenian community, do not take it as a fact. Quite a few Armenians in London were wondering when and where he is going to have a meeting with them. Well, I have to disappoint them. There will be a meeting, of course, but only with selected VIP ones. Why not have a broader meeting? Why not communicate and listen to the voices of those who may not have millions in their bank accounts but may have something valuable to say and contribute?

And this is not just president’s or his entourage’s fault. It is also a failure of (self-proclaimed) ‘leaders of Armenian community’ in London. Some of them are pretty protective of a circle they’ve created, and wary of letting others to challenge, let alone get in or even collaborate with.

There is such a huge potential in Armenians living or residing in Britain. It’s a relatively small but highly successful community.
ARMENIAN immigrants and their descendants are the most successful ethnic group in the country, according to an analysis of “melting pot” Britain.
It is therefore such a shame for not using this potential. And I am not referring here to using it for propaganda purposes or ‘information wars’, but to facilitate Armenia’s democratic transformation. For now, this aim - the most important, in my opinion, aim - does not seem to be high (or at all) on the list of priorities of those in the community who will be meeting president Sargsyan during his visit in London.

If I were to use Twitter hashtag here, it would be #fail.

* I use the word “community” loosely here, meaning not so much a “group” but PEOPLE.

Quote of The Day (in Armenian)
