Armenian Consulate in LA: Too lazy to write a speech on Genocide?

It sounds like a good idea that Armenian Consulate in LA decided to involve University students in writing speeches on Armenian Genocide. However, as one of the recipients of their letter suggested in an email message I received today, the real reason for that may be laziness:

The Consul General of Los Angeles and staff are too lazy to write their own speeches, they are soliciting speech from University students. Here is what they are sending out.

Subject: Speech Writer Needed for Armenian Consulate

The Armenian Consulate is currently looking for an Armenian volunteer who will be able to write a speech on Genocide for the Consul General Armen Liloyan. His speech is expected to be within 5 pages and completed within 2 weeks (by April 9, 2008). If your speech is chosen you guys will get a letter of recommendation for your work.

If you are interested please contact Sahak Sargsyan.

Honestly it just sounds like the consulate are lazy and or incompetent. When the Armenia Fund and the Assembly offices were neighbors to them, those institutions would help them write their speeches now that they are not, I guess they need to find another source. By the way, it is an open secret that most employees there pay a fee up front to get the “luxury” of being stationed in the Los Angeles office.

First of all, real writers get paid to do this work, not a "letter of recommendation". Isn't this a subject important enough to at lesat pay for? Second, April 9 is a very interesting date--will this be read "in honor of the inauguration"? Look before you leap.

They could have put a nice spin on this.

I think that's how the whole MFA should work from now on.
At least a student would be smart enough not to write all the BS that Oskanian has been saying lately,
e.g. about the defeat of Azerbaijan in UN

that's just lame. didn't lilayan work in england before? doesn't he know english?? greattttt, another consul general who doesn't know english. that's all we need. all those so called "diplomats" in that office need to GET AN EDUCATION and STOP PAYING FOR THEIR POSTS!!!!!!
that's why no one even bothers to respect them. i had to go once to the office for a power of attorney, and at 11am (their adddmission hour), the secretary said that there's no one who could help me. really, let's get some normal people in there.

What are they going to give a letter of recommendation for? It's not as though someone volunteered.
"We recommend Mr./Ms. XXXXXian for writing a speech we were supposed to write? He/she demonstrated excellent speech writing skills?" Too funny...
Sometimes I'm just ashamed to be Armenian.

The Azeri, Turkish, or Jewish Consul Generals would NEVER have a student write a speech about the Khojaly Massacres, the Armenian Genocide or the Jewish Holocaust. Take some lessons from them Paron Consul.

I believe we should look at things from a more constructive stance. The Consul first and foremost doesn't impose political overtones nor does it exercise foreign policy in any way. That is all taken care of in Washington D.C. For all you well informed individuals the Consul in Los Angeles serves to enhance ties with the Diaspora, the Armenian youth, International trade with Armenia etc...

I think we are all extremely pessimistic lately with all things related to Armenia and political or government affiliated. We should look outside the box and see this message as simply an opportunity for concerned and passionate Armenian youth to be directly involved in the happenings at the Consulate's office in Los Angeles. Non-Political of course.

Let us all just look at things not one side nor the other; but let us open our eyes and be more constructive and helpful, rather than talk, which is all Armenians have been good for centuries.....

Hmmm...If the Consulate wanted to they would never have sent out such a mass e-mail. They could've just paid someone to write it

people just keep talking trash all the time and say couldn't it be like this or couldn't it be like that but they are the ones sitting in front of their computers and just thinking something will happen without them doing anything...

the real people are the lazy people that just criticize and open their mouths like they are something ten times better

for the anonymous who left a "let's have a constructive stance"...get out of your dashnak hole.

Guys, be as critical or as supportive as you wish to be. However, I ask everyone to remain within the limits of civilised debate and use of wording.

Thanks for your understanding!

hey to lusine who responded in the most uneducated manner...for your information I have no party affiliation whatsoever, I'm just sick and tired of people just criticizing and just complaining...if people are soo concerned about their role in Armenia's future let them do something productive and make progress not just talk talk talk...

If the consul Mr. Liloyan represents the Consulate of Armenia in Los Angeles, and the Consulate represents the Republic of Armenia, it saddens me to find out that the Consulate and the Republic of Armenia do not know what to say about the Armenian Genocide and seek the help of young students in Los Angeles.
Shame on you Mr. Consul, for taking the most tragic time in Armenian history, and turn it in to some sort of a contest. Am I to think that the Consulate doesn’t know anything about the Armenian Genocide?
If that’s the case, I suggest to you Mr. Liloyan to go and read Peter Balakian's book "The Burning Tigris".
